This critical hub for Pacific Northwest trade uses RePlay® to rejuvenate pavement and lower maintenance costs

At a glance
Problem:
- Brittle pavement
- Frequent, costly maintenance
Outcome:
- Supple, resilient surface
- Less maintenance
- Lower costs
Challenge
At Terminal 6 of the Port of Portland, a massive, 1.77 million square-foot parking lot paved with permeable asphalt has served as the landing and launching spot for thousands of vehicle imports and exports. However, the pavement, designed to allow water to filter through, had become brittle, causing rocks to break loose and damage the pristine paint on the cars as they were driven off the ships.
Solution
To address the deteriorating asphalt, the Port of Portland opted to apply RePlay, a biobased, environmentally friendly solution that fortifies asphalt with renewable agricultural oils. RePlay works by penetrating deep into the asphalt surface, rejuvenating the binder and reinforcing the asphalt's structural integrity. Unlike traditional surface treatments, RePlay is absorbed into the asphalt, enhancing the cohesion between asphalt particles and reducing the brittleness caused by the voids inherent in permeable asphalt.
Results
The application of RePlay significantly reduced the need for maintenance on the lot. Previously, crews had to sweep the lot quarterly to clear the loose debris, but after RePlay was applied, this was reduced to just once a year. Additionally, because RePlay penetrates the surface without leaving a residue, the Port was able to avoid the costly process of restriping the parking lot, saving them considerable time and money.
